Competitor sales tracking: a weekly routine for Shopify stores

Watching competitors is easy to start and hard to keep up.

You check a few stores, get busy, and three months later a rival has launched a product line you never saw coming. The fix is a short, regular routine focused on the few signals that actually change your decisions.

What to track

  • Best-sellers. Which products bring in most of each competitor’s sales, and whether that list is changing.
  • New products. What each store launches, and how those launches sell in their first weeks.
  • Price changes and promotions. When competitors cut prices or run sales, and what happens to their sales afterwards.
  • Stock changes. Restocks show strong demand. Products that stay sold out can be gaps you can fill.
  • Revenue trend. Whether each store is growing, flat or shrinking.

A 30-minute weekly routine

  1. Review alerts (10 minutes). Skim the week’s new product and price change alerts. Flag anything in your own category.
  2. Compare best-sellers (10 minutes). Put each competitor’s 7-day best-sellers next to last week’s. New entries are your most important signal.
  3. Check the trend (5 minutes). Note which stores are growing fastest and look at what they launched or changed recently.
  4. Decide one action (5 minutes). Pick a single response: test a product, adjust a price, plan a promotion or restock earlier. One action a week adds up quickly.

How to read the signals

A competitor launching a product isn’t news on its own. A launch that sells strongly for two weeks is. Likewise, one price cut might be a clearance, while a series of cuts across several stores suggests a crowded market and falling margins. Look for patterns across time or across stores before you react.

Keep it sustainable

Track fewer stores well rather than many stores badly. Ten to twenty competitors is plenty for most niches. Set alerts so the information comes to you, and keep a simple log of what you decided each week so you can see which moves paid off.
